The overall aim of the project is to assist the seven participating countries (including Mauritius) to create an operational CDM and voluntary carbon market framework. Promotion of access to the carbon market, financing and technology will result in sustainable development outcomes and, ultimately, market transformation.
To achieve these objectives, the project will work to ensure:
- The private sector is actively engaged.
- The public sector provides the policy and legal context needed for successful national participation in the CDM.
- The NGO and academic community can provide inputs to the project according to their strengths.
- Promising public and private sector carbon projects are identified.

The project will enable Seychelles to prepare its Second National Communication to the Conference of the Parties of the UNFCCC. The activities within the Second National Communication are continuation and upgrade of the work done under the Initial National Communication (1997-2000) and the Enabling Activities phase II (2003-2005). The main components of the project are:
a) Inventory of Greenhouse gas (GHG) Emissions
b) assessment of potential impacts of climate change on the most vulnerable sectors
c) analysis of potential measures to abate increase of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions
d) National Action Plan to address climate change and its adverse impacts.
Project signed in June 2006. Activities are ongoing and contract signed for the following studies being undertaken:

The project objectives include:

Capacity building to promote sustainable land management and practices in Mauritius;

Development of policy and planning tools for Sustainable land Management, including updated legislation, zoning devices, information systems and planning systems. The approach towards the formulation of a Land Management Information System will be reviewed; and

Integration of Sustainable Land Management priorities into national physical development plans, the CCD and the National Forestry Action Plan.
The implementation of the project has started as from October 2006. The project secretariat is based at the Forestry Services. NAP will be developed under this project with funds from the Ministry of Environment. Capacity Building in Environmental Economics and Remote Sensing Application will take place in February 2008. |

The long-term objective of the project is the protection and management of marine biodiversity in the Republic of Mauritius, so as to ensure the sustainability of its marine biological resources, which are of global, regional and national significance and the equitable sharing of the benefits to local communities on a sustainable basis. This will be achieved by establishing a system of marine protected areas (MPA) in order to ensure conservation and protection of critical and unique marine biodiversity within the Republic of Mauritius.
The two immediate objectives include:
Altogether, the project will have seven interlinked components which include enhancing consultative processes with stakeholders, developing a strategic framework for management of a system of MPAs, identification and establishment of four MPAs, strengthening the institutional capacity of Mauritius to manage MPAs, establishment of educational and awareness building programs, establishment of a scientific and monitoring program, and strengthen policy and legislation for the conservation of MPAs in Mauritius. |

This PPG project intends to develop a GEF full-sized project whose objective is to build a network of protected areas which would include private lands for effective conservation of biodiversity, specifically forest biodiversity, on the island of Mauritius. The PPG project activities are; (1) assessment of terrestrial biodiversity priority areas, (2) economic valuation and financing plan for the terrestrial area network, (3) assessment of the management effectiveness, and analysis of the legal and institutional framework and development of incentive system, (4) development of IAS (Invasive Alien Species) action plan for the PAN, and (5) definition of the full sized project’s scope and strategy.
Current Stage:
Total 7 consultants are recruited for this project to carry out assessment of biodiversity priority areas, economic analysis for PAN, assessment of management effectiveness, and analysis of legal and institutional framework. The inception workshop was held on 3rd December 2008.

The project aims to develop a FSP on integrated ecosystem management approach to maintain structure and functional integrity of marine, coastal and terrestrial ecosystems on both the granitic and coral islands in the Seychelles.
The Support Activities component will address cross-cutting issues and activities critical to the success of the first two components. For example, supportive activities will include project management and co-ordination arrangements, policy formulation and strategic planning process, institutional strengthening and capacity building at all levels.
Outcome 1: Create enabling conditions for mainstreaming biodiversity management into cross- sectoral planning;
Outcome 2: develop methods and means for integrating biodiversity into artisanal fisheries management,

The Biosecurity Project aims at addressing the threats posed to the Seychelles’ biodiversity by the introduction of IAS through the movement of people and merchandise into and within the country.
