CIVIL SOCIETY EMPOWERMENT

Background

The creation of the Mauritius Council of Social Services as an umbrella body of NGOs in 1965 translated the need to have a common social service coordinating body. NGOs have been participating actively inthe promotion of the welfare of Mauritian citizens. Some have shown excellent track records on national level. However, in an era of globalization and the rapid process of industrialization the country is experiencing, new challenges have emerged. In November 2001 the 2nd NGO University organised by MACOSS provided an opportunity to reflect on the roles and contribution of NGOs and revisit the social challenges and tools to empower NGos in this new millennium.
